Two Sigma is generously sponsoring a Ph.D. fellowship for the academic year 2024-25. This competitive fellowship provides payment of tuition and fees as well as a generous living stipend for one academic semester or the entire academic year, depending on the number of fellowship recipients.  

Congratulations to Jimmy Butler and Zhexiao Lin who have been honored with a one-semester Two Sigma Fellowship for the 2024-25 academic school year. 

"I am very grateful to have been awarded this fellowship," said Butler. "This will be a tremendous help in carrying out my research, and I'm excited to see what I am able to accomplish with it!"

 

Butler is co-advised by Adjunct Professor Jon McAuliffe and Associate Professor Fernando Pérez, and his research is broadly focused on statistical methods to analyze extreme weather and climate events and their associated impacts, with particular emphasis on uncertainty quantification. In his free time, he likes to try out new restaurants and obsessively care for his houseplant collection. Butler earned a B.A. in in both Statistics and Physics from the University of Chicago.

Lin is a second-year Ph.D. student in the Department of Statistics at UC Berkeley, advised by Associate Professor Peng Ding, Professor Emeritus and Professor of the Graduate School Peter Bickel, and Fang Han, an associate professor in Statistics and Economics at the University of Washington. Previously, he received his master's degree from the University of Washington in 2022 and his bachelor's degree from Zhejiang University in 2020. His research interests include causal inference, rank- and graph-based methods, nonparametric statistics, econometrics, and deep learning. In his free time, he enjoys working out and playing MOBA games.

"I am deeply grateful to receive this fellowship," said Lin. "The fellowship will inspire me to perform meaningful research in research aimed at addressing real-world problems."
